How is an LPG gas cylinder manufactured, and what makes it safe and reliable?
The gas cylinder manufacturing process involves several carefully controlled stages, from steel preparation and forming to welding, heat treatment, testing and final inspection.
This guide explains the typical production process for refillable welded steel LPG cylinders, commonly used for household and commercial gas distribution.
1. Raw Material Selection and Steel Disc Preparation
Manufacturing begins with selecting suitable steel coils or sheets according to the cylinder design and applicable material requirements.
The steel is cut or punched into circular blanks known as steel discs, which will later be formed into cylinder parts.
Material thickness, chemical composition, mechanical properties and traceability are important considerations at this stage.

2. Deep Drawing and Cylinder Head Forming
Steel discs are formed into upper and lower cylinder heads using hydraulic deep-drawing equipment.
The formed parts then undergo trimming and dimensional checks to achieve the required shape and fit.
Accurate forming helps maintain consistent dimensions and supports reliable assembly and welding.

3. Component Assembly and Welding
The cylinder heads are assembled and joined by circumferential welding. The valve boss or neck ring, foot ring and protective guard are also attached according to the approved cylinder design.
Weld quality is critical because defects in pressure-retaining welds can compromise cylinder integrity.
Welding procedures, equipment settings and inspection requirements must be controlled throughout production.

4. Heat Treatment and Surface Preparation
After welding, cylinders undergo heat treatment when required by the approved manufacturing process to achieve the specified material and welded-joint properties.
Shot blasting or other suitable surface preparation methods remove surface contaminants and prepare the cylinder for protective coating.

5. Pressure Testing and Quality Inspection
Before being approved for service, cylinders undergo the inspections and tests required by their applicable manufacturing standards.
These may include:
- Visual and dimensional inspection
- Weld examination and required nondestructive testing
- Hydrostatic pressure testing
- Additional production or batch tests, where specified
Test pressures, inspection methods and acceptance criteria must follow the applicable standard and approved cylinder design. They cannot be assumed to be identical for every cylinder type.

6. Coating, Valve Installation and Leak Testing
Following the required inspections and surface preparation, cylinders receive protective paint or powder coating to help resist external corrosion.
Compatible valves are installed according to the specified assembly procedure, followed by required leakage testing of the assembled cylinder and valve connections.
Cylinder identification, safety markings and traceability information must also comply with applicable requirements.

7. Final Inspection and Packaging
Before shipment, finished LPG cylinders undergo final checks covering appearance, markings, dimensions, required test records and overall conformity.
Accepted cylinders are then packaged according to the agreed export and transportation requirements.
The exact manufacturing sequence may vary depending on cylinder construction, equipment configuration and applicable standards.
