What Is a Gas Cylinder Valve?

 

A gas cylinder valve is installed in the cylinder’s threaded valve boss or neck ring and provides a controlled connection between the gas inside the cylinder and the filling or withdrawal system. Its primary functions are to:

A cylinder valve is not normally a pressure regulator. The valve opens or closes the gas passage, while a compatible regulator is generally used when stable downstream pressure is required.

 

Main Types of Cylinder Valves

 

 

Manually Operated LPG Cylinder Valves

Manually operated valves use a handwheel or operating mechanism to open and close the gas passage.

They are commonly used on refillable domestic, commercial and industrial LPG cylinders. The correct inlet thread, outlet connection, sealing arrangement and safety configuration depend on the cylinder design and destination market.

Specifications and testing requirements for dedicated manually operated LPG cylinder valves may be covered by standards such as ISO 15995 or the applicable regional or national standard.

 

Self-Closing LPG Cylinder Valves

A self-closing valve is designed to close automatically when the regulator or connector is removed.

These valves are frequently used in household LPG applications where quick connection and convenient cylinder exchange are required. The valve and regulator must be selected as a compatible system.

Dedicated self-closing LPG cylinder valves may be specified according to ISO 14245 or another applicable market standard.

 

Industrial Gas Cylinder Valves

Industrial gas cylinder valves are used for compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide and other specified gases.

Valve design and materials must be compatible with the intended gas service. Inlet threads, outlet connections and cleanliness requirements vary significantly between gases and markets.

ISO 10297 is one of the principal international standards covering the design, type testing and marking of many refillable gas cylinder valves. Dedicated LPG valves are covered separately.

 

Residual Pressure Valves

Residual pressure valves are designed to retain a small positive pressure inside the cylinder after use. This function can help reduce the entry of air, moisture or contaminants.

Some residual pressure valves also include a non-return function. Their suitability must be confirmed according to the gas service, filling process and applicable standard. ISO 15996 addresses cylinder valves incorporating residual-pressure devices.

 

Valves with Pressure-Relief Devices

Depending on the gas, cylinder design and regulatory requirements, a valve may incorporate a pressure-relief valve, rupture disc, fusible element or another approved device.

A pressure-relief device is not universally required or universally prohibited. Its type and operating parameters must be selected according to the applicable cylinder standard, gas service and regulations of the destination market.

Thread descriptions must include the complete thread designation. A nominal diameter alone is not sufficient because threads can differ in pitch, taper, profile, sealing method and gauge requirements.

Q: Does a gas cylinder valve regulate outlet pressure?

A: Normally, no. A conventional cylinder valve opens or closes the gas passage. A compatible pressure regulator is used when stable downstream pressure is required. Some specialized valve designs integrate additional pressure-control functions, but these must be identified by the specific valve model.

Q: Are all LPG cylinder valves interchangeable?
