An LPG gas cylinder does not have one fixed number of parts. Its construction depends on the cylinder design, capacity, valve type and applicable national or international standard.
A typical refillable welded steel LPG cylinder generally includes five to seven main component groups: the pressure-retaining cylinder shell, a cylinder neck ring or bung, an LPG cylinder valve, a valve guard or carry handle, a foot ring, and the required markings and protective coating. Certain designs may also incorporate additional valve accessories or safety devices.
Understanding these gas cylinder parts is important for cylinder manufacturers because every component must be compatible with the cylinder design and intended service.
Main components of an LPG gas cylinder

Rolled Steel Coil: The Starting Material
For welded steel LPG cylinders, production usually begins with suitable steel sheet supplied in rolled steel coil form. Depending on the cylinder specification and manufacturing process, the material may be supplied as hot-rolled or cold-rolled steel coil.
The steel grade, thickness, chemical composition and mechanical properties must be selected according to the cylinder design and applicable manufacturing standard. LPG cylinder steel must also have suitable formability and weldability because it will undergo blanking, deep drawing, welding and other manufacturing operations.
The required steel coil width can be selected according to the steel disc diameter and blanking arrangement. A suitable coil width helps improve material utilization and reduce offcuts during disc production.

Steel Discs
A steel disc is a circular blank cut or punched from the rolled steel coil. It is the intermediate material used to produce the upper and lower cylinder heads.
The dimensions of the steel disc depend on the finished cylinder diameter, head profile, material thickness and deep-drawing process. Accurate control of disc diameter, thickness and edge quality helps support stable forming and consistent cylinder dimensions.

Upper and Lower Cylinder Heads
In a common two-piece welded LPG cylinder design, the pressure-retaining shell is formed from an upper cylinder head and a lower cylinder head. Each head is produced by deep drawing a steel disc into the required shape.
The upper head normally includes the opening for the cylinder neck ring or valve boss. The lower head forms the bottom section of the pressure-retaining shell. After forming and dimensional inspection, the two heads are joined by circumferential welding.
Some welded cylinders use a different construction, such as a cylindrical shell combined with separate upper and lower heads. The exact configuration depends on the approved cylinder design.
Because the cylinder heads retain internal pressure, their material, profile, wall thickness and forming quality must comply with the applicable technical specification.

Cylinder Neck Ring or Cylinder Bung
The cylinder neck ring-also referred to in some markets as a cylinder bung or valve boss-provides the connection between the pressure-retaining shell and the LPG cylinder valve.
It is normally fitted to the opening in the upper head and securely joined according to the cylinder design. Its internal thread must match the valve inlet thread, while its material and dimensions must be compatible with the cylinder manufacturing and welding process.
The cylinder neck ring should not be confused with the external valve guard. The neck ring receives the valve; the valve guard protects the valve from external impact.

LPG Cylinder Valve
The LPG cylinder valve controls the filling and withdrawal of gas and provides the main service closure for the cylinder.
Depending on the market and application, an LPG cylinder may use a manually operated valve or a self-closing valve. Valve inlet threads, outlet connections, flow characteristics and sealing arrangements vary between countries and cylinder systems.
Certain valves may incorporate additional functions, such as an excess-flow device or pressure-relief device, when required by the valve design or applicable regulations. However, these devices are not present in every LPG cylinder valve.
The valve must be selected to match the cylinder neck ring, intended LPG service and requirements of the destination market.

Cylinder Carry Handle and Valve Guard
The component fitted around the upper part of a domestic LPG cylinder is often described as a cylinder carry handle, valve guard or protective shroud.
Depending on its design, it may perform two functions:
- Protecting the valve from impact during handling and transportation
- Providing a suitable grip for carrying the cylinder
Not every valve guard is intended to function as a carrying handle, so the correct term should be selected according to the component's actual construction.
Steel valve guards and carry handles are commonly formed and welded to the upper cylinder head. Their dimensions, welding position and load-bearing requirements should follow the approved cylinder design.

Cylinder Foot Ring
The cylinder foot ring, also called the cylinder base ring, is fitted to the lower head. It supports the cylinder in an upright position and prevents the curved pressure-retaining bottom from resting directly on the ground.
A correctly designed foot ring helps provide:
- Stable vertical positioning
- Protection for the lower cylinder head
- Clearance between the pressure shell and the ground
- Easier storage and handling
The foot ring is not normally a pressure-retaining component, but its dimensions, strength and welding quality remain important to the overall usability of the cylinder.
Are Coating and Markings Considered Gas Cylinder Parts?
Protective coating and permanent markings are not normally counted as separate structural parts, but they are essential elements of a completed LPG cylinder.
The surface coating helps protect the steel cylinder against external corrosion. Required markings may identify information such as the manufacturer, serial number, water capacity, test pressure, manufacturing date and applicable approval.
The exact marking and coating requirements depend on the governing standard and destination market.
Optional Accessories
Additional equipment depends on the cylinder system and application. Possible accessories include valve caps, plugs, seals, level-indicating devices and specialized valve protection components.
A pressure gauge alone should not generally be treated as an accurate LPG contents indicator. While liquid LPG remains inside the cylinder, pressure is strongly influenced by temperature and LPG composition. Remaining LPG quantity is more reliably determined by weight or an appropriate level-measuring system.
